The extended and modified van had been a good idea. At least that was Blake’s thought when he first saw it. After riding in it with seven hunters for twelve and a half hours, he laughed at how magnificently stupid the idea had been.

They had agreed to drive in four-hour shifts when they started out. That was supposed to be about thirty-two hours of drive-time in total to reach the motel in Boulder.

That had also sounded like a good idea in the beginning. By the end of his driving shift, Jones had been nicknamed Nascar Nate. The needle had barely dropped below seventy-five while he was behind the wheel. Arnie stayed in the slow lane, refusing to pass cars that were doing only fifty. Jay at least tried to do the speed limit, but riding with him driving was akin to playing Russian Roulette; he seemed incapable of keeping the van in its lane.

After more than twelve hours, and with only two rest stops, arguments began to break out, and Max called for an overnight stop at a cheap little motel on a side road in South Bend, Indiana.

Blake was the first out of the van, glad to finally have some fresh air and elbow room. The shady-looking motel with its less-than-clean rooms was a welcome reprieve from the confines of the van. The only thing in sight that looked less like it was straight from a horror-movie set was the even shadier-looking bar set at the far end of the same paved lot as the motel.

Blake followed Max and his group to the Bender Bar, hoping that after a few shots, or beers, the others would calm down, and he could get some sleep before the next day’s drive started.

The Bender Bar was small and rundown, but it had a grill that offered burgers, hot dogs, fries, and nachos prepared fresh to order.

Blake placed his order and stood propped at the bar with his beer to wait. Jay sidled up next to him and grinned. He was missing a few teeth, so that did nothing to make him look more approachable. Everything about his appearance screamed redneck badass, in Blake’s opinion.

“So, word has it you’re the best exorcist around, and you worked for the Vatican for a long time.” He turned up his beer.

“That’s what they say.” Blake wanted to have a conversation with Jay as much as he wanted to kiss a snake.

“They also say you have some kind of demonic power. Is it true?” He took another drink and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand.

His mannerisms made Blake bristle. Instead of answering, he only gave Jay a scathing look. Blake then turned his attention to watching the old grill cook as he prepared all eight burgers with a grace that showed he had been at that job for many years.

The others seemed intent on sitting in the bar to eat and drink. Blake decided to take his back to his room so he could be alone.
